Our History

UTCRAS was founded in 1982 as an extension of its former motor company parent. It was created based on the customer requirement to perform wheelset assembly work along with motor repairs and overhauls. It was started out of necessity, but matured over four decades into one of the most sought-after and well respected rail industry suppliers. In addition to expanding its wheelset operations, UTCRAS opened four other divisions.  In an attempt to encompass all wheelset assembly needs by its customers, UTCRAS created its Gearbox Division in the late eighties. Today, UTCRAS can assemble new gear units as well overhaul existing in-service units. Adding this service to the company’s repertoire propelled UTCRAS to be awarded many overhaul projects. Plagued by constant delays and inadequate service, UTCRAS opened its Bearing Reconditioning Division in the mid-nineties. With this division, UTCRAS could meet schedule and separate itself from the shortfalls of other roller bearing reconditioning companies.  Sensing the trend of the car builders seeking a one-stop-shop for their trucks (bogies), UTCRAS established its Truck Assembly Division just at the turn of the millennia. Today, UTCRAS has been awarded many truck overhaul and new build contracts because of its technical and commercial advantage. Following the acquisition of a Philadelphia based machine shop in 2008, UTCRAS created its Machining and Fabrication Division. This was the springboard for UTCRAS' expansion into full wheel and axle machining. In 2019, UTCRAS broke ground on its second location in California allowing UTCRAS to provide more timely and competitive services coast to coast.      With consistent reinvestment in equipment, processes, and personnel UTCRAS will continue to keep America moving.
